Here's the perspective of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Service:
"Service is the expression of love. Serve in whatever possible manner you can.
Ask yourself "How Can I be useful to people around me and to the whole world?" Then your heart stars blossoming. Otherwise, we are always thinking, "What about me, what about me?" It's nothing!
Ask, "How can I be useful, how can I give to the world?"
